Tilling the soil in preparation for grass seeding
Much of the park is taken up by three soccer fields that are heavily used by the Toronto Eagles. For most of the summer the fields were in very bad condition because of a drought that turned the grass into straw.
In August staff and volunteers from Dufferin Grove Park in cooperation with the Toronto Eagles began watering the fields using garden hoses and sprinklers purchased in local stores. The results were encouraging. The straw turned back into grass.
Unfortunately the watering wasn't enough to salvage the entire field and re-seeding was necessary this fall. The grass seed planted by the city has recently started to sprout.
This summer's dry spell also put great stress on the young trees planted in the park. Some were saved by watering, but several died.
